During my observation days, I observed every English teachers in Ateno JHs. From grade 7 to grade 10. Of course they have different methods and strategies. The literature class was something that I found very unique. The lesson was taught by mam Sally, my cooperating teacher, in grade 7.
Literature class, a lesson that I will never find in grade 7 in Indonesia. Since English is their second language, they learn the higher level lesson than we have in Indonesia. In Indonesia you will only find kind of text lessons and tenses in grade 7. What makes me more impressed about this class is the teaching method that the teacher used. The students were divided into several groups consisted of 4-5 people (if I’m not mistaken). Its called literature group. They have their own role in the group. For example, there are a student who had identified some part of the text, a student to monitor the other members of the group to remain silence and be focus, and a student who had to speak up to tell their result to the others. I found it interesting, so that every students in the group had to work on their own. And of course, I believe that the teacher had different assessment related to their roles.
I think it is an effective way that I can use when I’m going to teach kind of texts in Indonesia. So that the students have their responsibilites for their own task. But of course, ever students in their group are able to help the one who has the struggle in finishing their own task to make their group task becomes perfect.
1.2 Learning materials and innovation
· Textbooks
· Projector
· Laptop
· Blackboards
· Chalks
1.3 Sources of learning and technology used by the teachers
The lesson sources are based on books and probably internet. The good thing is, those book that the teacher used are also available in their library. There are plenty of books that you can read in the library. And you can always connect to internet in the library because it has several computers that you can use to find sources or learning material.
For technology that the teachers use, is not much different that we also use in Indonesa. All of the teachers that I observed only use projector and laptop as their learning technology. Even some of them do not use technology, they just print out the materials and distributed it to their students. But there is one teacher who seemed to use power point interestingly. This teacher really knew how to make his students enjoyed the class. So that he made an interesting power point and the animations. He made it as he did a magic thing, while he wa actually not. And the students seemed interested in his class. He pretended to point to the LED screen, and suddenly the animations appeared, and all of the students laughed and clapped as he did it.
Using technology in teaching and learning process is neccesary. Its the millenium generation, we cannot put the technology away, instead we have to involve technology to make the students enjoy the class so that they can get the lesson easly.
1.4 Authentic assessment used by the teachers
All I know, they have 2 or 3 meetings for every topic. In that meetings there will be the formative and the summative assessment. In the first and the second meeting, the teacher would just give the students the lesson and the formative. The formative could be anything, it was probably just oral questions or kind of exercises. The summative could be a group project if its the literature class, a presentation for poem, and a quiz. I think the most common summative that the teacher used is quizz. It will help the teacher to measure the students understanding on what they have taught.
